The Difference Between Ablative and Non-Ablative Lasers
Learn the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers, how each works on your skin, and what to expect for downtime and the number of sessions.
What you'll learn
- Ablative lasers vaporize the skin's surface to trigger healing and often lead to more downtime.
- Non-ablative lasers heat the dermis to promote collagen production without damaging the epidermis.
- Non-ablative treatments involve less downtime but will probably need multiple sessions.
- Knowing the difference helps you choose the option that will work best for you before booking.
If you’re researching laser resurfacing treatments, then you may have heard the words “ablative” and “non-ablative” roaming around. While they may sound super technical, they are definitely words you want to know before booking your appointment.

What are ablative laser treatments?
For a dramatic treatment, ablative lasers are the way to go. They vaporize the skin’s surface to trigger the body’s healing process. As your tissue repairs itself from the damage, you will notice a significant improvement once your skin recovers. Since ablative lasers use more intense wavelengths, they often lead to more downtime than their non-ablative counterparts.
What are non-ablative laser treatments?
Non-ablative wavelengths create controlled thermal heating to the dermis to promote collagen production. This is done without damaging your skin’s surface (epidermis). The collagen boost can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Since they are a less invasive option, you won’t have to worry about significant downtime. However, you will probably need multiple sessions to reach your desired look.
